What is a Lawn Sweeper?

With Spring right around the corner, now is the perfect time to start prepping your lawn.  One of the first things that you may need to do is remove all the debris in your yard that the Winter months left behind.  Allowing this fallen debris to lie on your lawn damages the grass and can even cause bare spots in your lawn.  This is where a lawn sweeper becomes of great use! So what is a lawn sweeper? A lawn sweeper is a piece of lawn care equipment that is pushed or pulled across a lawn to pick up leaves, twigs, grass clippings and other debris from your yard.  Lawn sweepers are an easy-to-use and efficient way to clean up your yard, as they are much faster than raking and require less energy to operate.  Although there are push lawn sweepers, pull-behind lawn sweepers that attach to a tractor are the most common as they offer more value to the user and make clean-up a faster, less tiring job.

How Do Lawn Sweepers Work?

Within a lawn sweeper there are high-velocity brushes that are fastened to the axle, which are connected to the sweeper’s rotating wheels.  As the lawn sweeper moves, the rotation of the wheels causes the brushes to comb through the grass, dislodging any debris or grass clippings, and then tossing the material into the rear hopper (sometimes called a bag).  Once the hopper gets full, you simply dump its contents into the trash or onto a pile for disposal.

When to Use a Lawn Sweeper?

Lawn sweepers are one of the few pieces of lawn care equipment that can be used pretty much all year round.  Here are the most common uses for a lawn sweeper by season: what is a lawn sweeper Spring: Rough Winters often leave debris such as sticks and twigs laying around your yard, and this is where a lawn sweeper comes in.  Early Spring is also an ideal time to dethatch your lawn, leaving a significant amount of thatch behind for your lawn sweeper to pick up.  Lastly, lawn sweepers are commonly used to pick up grass clippings throughout the Spring.   Summer: Same as in the Spring, lawn sweepers are mostly used for picking up grass clippings throughout the Summer months.   Fall: Fall is arguably the best time of the year to own a lawn sweeper.  With leaves and pine needles starting to fall, a lawn sweeper makes Fall clean up easy and effortless.  But let’s not forget that it is also very useful for picking up the remainder of your grass clippings before the Winter months.   Winter: Once the leaves are picked up and the lawn mowers are put away, a lawn sweeper can still be put to good use throughout the Winter by cleaning up any of debris that has fallen on the ground.
