The best time for dethatching is right before your lawn’s most vigorous growth cycle–late spring from warm-season grasses and early fall for cool-season grasses. Not sure if you need to dethatch? The best way to test your lawn is to use a hand spade to remove a 2-3 inch thick plug from your lawn. If you see more than ½ inch of spongy, brown material between the blades and the topsoil, it’s time to dethatch! Brinly’s 48” Tow-Behind Dethatcher was designed for dethatching large lawns efficiently. Two rows of flexible tine tips comb the lawn, extracting thatch and depositing it on the surface where it can be mulched by the mower blades or removed using a sweeper or lawn vacuum. The drawbar’s adjustable mounting positions adapt to accommodate all tractor hitch heights. Unique to the DT-48BH is an inline wheel design, which levels the tray so that it follows the contours of the lawn without adding to the overall width of the attachment.

What is the benefit of a front-mount dethatcher?

A front-mount dethatcher is great because it gives you the option to do multiple jobs at once; you can dethatch in the front, and then still pick up the thatch with a bagger or lawn sweeper simultaneously.

What can a Dethatcher be used for?

The Brinly Dethatcher is designed to loosen or de-thatch lawns. After dethatching, lawns will be easier to sweep and better for aeration as well. Dethatchers are important to soil health because it removes layers of dead plant material and debris.

Can I use a dethatcher with my irrigation system?

Yes, the dethatcher units should not be able to harm sprinkler heads if they are at or below grass level. Raised heads and drip lines would need to be thatched around.

How do you set the depth of the tines?

The tines are initially adjusted when you are assembling the dethatcher using the wheel mounting brackets. If you are looking for a dethatcher that has different thatching heights, you might want to check out our DT-402BH 40" dethatcher.

Will this work with a ZTR?

If your zero turn accepts a hitch pin it will attach. If you tow with a zero turn mower you'll want to be mindful that the spreading speed is 3 MPH and the towing speed is 5 MPH. Does this work with pine straw?

The Dethatcher definitely works to collect pine straw. If the pine straw is on top of the grass, we suggest adjusting the dethatcher to a higher position; it will drag the straw into rows. If the pine straw is embedded somewhat, adjust the Dethatcher per the instructions in the manual, and you will comb it up out of the grass, possibly along with any thatch. You will still need to collect the straw, but will be much easier at that point
